OUTRAGED IN BC: A 4/2 editorial in the Toronto Globe and Mail written
by Terry Glavin criticized public hypocrisy over separate land deals
with Native Indians and resource industries. The press and politicians
criticized a deal giving the Nisga'a tribe a portion of their
traditional lands with restrictions on rights of way and land use. In
another deal the British Columbian government gave forest-industry
giant Macmillan Bloedel 7,600 hectares of land on Vancouver Island,
waived environmental rules, and handed over millions of dollars in
additional subsidies. He says when the government hands over lands
rightfully belonging to the Nisga'a the government and press howl, but
"when an outfit like MacMillan Bloedel walks away with a substantial
chunk of our birthright, it's not considered even worthy of notice."
