Subject: Genocide of the Navajo People - this week's Healing Our World

Hello all,

Environmentalists, politicians, scholars, new age speakers and
theologians will often speak of the power and wisdom of the native
peoples of North America. Their reverence for life, connection to the
Earth and appreciation of the web of life are foundational concepts in
many philosophies. Yet while many non-Native American people speak of
that wisdom from comfortable settings, the United States government
continues to implement its final solution for the last remaining
original inhabitants of this land.

Please read this week's Healing Our World article when you can and learn
about the ominous February 2000 deadline by which the U.S. government
plans to complete the forced relocation of the Navajo, known as Dineh in
their native tongue, that remain at a site in Arizona that they have
inhabited since the U.S. Army tried to wipe them all out in 1863. The
relocation site is a desolate piece of land downstream from the location
of the nation's worst nuclear waste disaster in 1979 and is unfit for
humans or animals. All this because we want to exploit the resources
beneath their land. Over 12,000 have already been moved and 3,000 mostly
elderly people remain. Read of the criminal humans rights abuses that
are being implemented by our government.

The article "Resource Extraction and Genocide in America" can be found
at the Environment News Service (ENS) at
http://www.ens.lycos.com/ens/may99/1999L-05-02g.html.

An expanded version of this piece with a more complete Resource list can
be found at my web site at
http://www.jps.net/jackieg/articles/may03-1999g.html#letters. Due to
space limitations, the piece on ENS had to be shortened and the
Resources reduced.

Please consider contacting your elected representatives about this issue
(information about how to do that appears in my Resources section). And
if you are able, financial contributions are desperately needed by the
Dineh as well.

Thanks for your time. I wish you peace.

Jackie Giuliano
