The tomb of Ak-Pakal-Tan, a name meaning ``Shield of Ashes,'' appears to be part of an offering that was made at the start of a new era in the Mayan calendar in 771 B.C. The find was made in Comalcalco, in Tabasco state, 615 miles southeast of Mexico City. ``This type of discovery is important for the archaeological site at Comalcalco since we have not yet seen epigraphs or hieroglyphic cylinders,'' Armijo Torrijos, the head archaeologist at Comalcalco, told reporters. Researcher Gerardo Fernandez said the discovery would provide ``exact information about the Mayan society in general.'' The inscriptions, however, will be difficult to interpret because they appear to be a combination of two Mayan languages, he said. ``We can't really establish which language they were speaking. Right now, it is very difficult to say,'' he said. Ak-Pakal-Tan, whose remains were found in an urn next to a temple, might have been in his mid-20s when he died. His title was Yajau Kac, or ``Lord of Fire.'' The offering included bones from a manta ray tail and between 16 and 22 inscribed cylinders, Torrijos said.
