If you're itching to get back into dinghies once finals are over and don't
have warm weather plans for winter break, consider coming down to New York
to race Interclub Dinghies (doublehanded cat-rigged rolltacking machines --
a bit quirky, but home to historically excellent short course racing that
is the best sailing you can do outside of college). There are two events
that should be on your radar, and borrowed boats and free housing are
available for both events if you reach out early enough:

1. The New Years Regatta at Manhasset Bay Yacht Club (Dec. 30 and Jan. 1 --
no racing Dec. 31). The New Years Regatta started it all -- the first ever
winter sailing dinghy regatta back in 1932, which kicked off the sport of
frostbiting, and frostbiting led to the introduction of collegiate dinghy
racing and the first college dinghy nationals a few years after that, so
there's a lot of history at this event. There are divisions in Interclubs,
Lasers and Ideal 18s. The NOR is attached -- racing starts late enough on
New Years Day to allow people to sleep in a bit...

2. IC Midwinters at Larchmont YC (Jan. 26-27). The Midwinters is an A/B
college style regatta -- no boat rotations, but A and B divisions rotate in
and out every 2-3 races. Last year the weather was great and we had 35
teams (70 skippers, 70 crews), including teams from Harvard, Roger
Williams, NY Maritime, and a bunch of recent college sailing alums. The
NOR won't be ready for another week or so, but we'll have a discounted
entry fee for college teams again.

If you're interested in attending either event, please let me know and I
can help make arrangements with loaning out ICs and reserving beds with the
housing chairs.

Sincerely,
Peter Beardsley
