In my capacity as certfication newsmonger or certification blabbermouth — you
decide which description fits best — I am often asked to look stuff over before general public release, usually in the hopes that I might make a little news happen. So it was that I opened a UPS package that showed up at my door yesterday from the Certified Networking Professionals Association with a course guide entitled "Wireless LAN Analysis" for their latest cert offering: the Certified Wireless Analysis Professional (CWAP, and yes, they've heard all the tired jokes already). Despite its acronym, this cert is a real humdinger. According to Kevin Sandlin, leader of the CWNP, a Cisco CCIE who attended a beta teach of the class said it was the most challenging course he'd ever taken anywhere. A quick scan through the guide shows that it certainly wins big nerd points for cool tools: it's devoted to a quick burn through the bottom three layers of the ISO model from a wireless networking perspective, followed by chapters and labs galore on wireless
analyzers AirMagnet Trio, WildPackets AiroPeek NX, Network Instruments Observer, and TamoSoft's CommView for WiFi among others. But it's totally nuts and bolts oriented, and anybody who survives the training should not only know more than they did before they started, they should actually be
able to do something with it, too. Check it out at the CWAP home page.
