In August I posted three Guide entries about calling unmanaged code. One topic I failed to cover there, because I thought it was adequately covered in the .NET Framework documentation, was implementing callback functions. It turns out that the official documentation is a bit too brief on this topic, so I thought I'd flesh it out a bit.

As an old Windows programmer, most of the time I'm happy to be working with .NET, where all the ugliness of window classes, window handles, message loops, display contexts, and other such minutiae are hidden away. There are times, though, when I want the low-level capabilities that those things provide. One such is the Windows message loop, with which you can do many things. In his article The Message Loop Is Your Friend, author Rick Ruhl shows how you can use registered messages to pass information between applications—something that's rather difficult to do any other way.
