Not too long ago, all you had to do was pass a few tests and you could get a high-paying job in the exciting world of computer technology. It seemed that everyone was certified in one technology or another; even 12-year old kids were getting in on the act. Recruiters couldn't get "technology professionals" on the books fast enough.
Then reality set in.
Businesses and technology workers alike now view certification as unimportant. But is certification important? Was it ever? I think so.
Don't get me wrong — I think just passing a test or two doesn't qualify anyone as an expert. But I do think that certification can be useful, and could even be important, if the certification process was fixed.
I've started a new Professional Development section to help deal with issues like these. In this section, I'll deal more with the career aspects of being a DBA than pure tech knowledge.
