It's always interesting for me to learn about the latest magic bullet in the certification world — you know, those absolutely marvelous certifications like the CCIE that lead to six-figure incomes, cure shyness, and help prevent unpleasant blotching and spotting. In the course of handling career Q&A for TechTarget from 9/27 through 10/8/2004, I was forcibly reminded of how many people look at the SAP/RC consulting certifications in the same light. These credentials are reported to lead to terrific, high-paying jobs, and right now, there's far more demand than there are qualified professionals to meet it. But before jumping on the SAP/R3 horse and riding it to the end of the trail, ponder these facts:

  1. The SAP/R3 program has been around for four or more years, and there have never been enough certified professionals to meet the demand during that whole period. Part of the answer to the "Why?" question is that the credentials are expensive, time-consuming, and difficult to earn; the other part of the answer to the "Why?" question is that though many try to earn these certs, the ratio of those who try to those who success is dauntingly low (same is true for CCIE, BTW).
  2. If everybody who wanted to be an SAP/R3 consultant could somehow magically become one overnight, guess what would happen? Supply would outstrip demand, pay and perceived value would drop like a stone, and those in search of a magic career bullet would be dreaming about something else instead. "Be careful what you wish for..." goes an old saw. To that I'd add: "Be sure that where your certification dreams lead is someplace you'll be happy, even if the Mercedes, the fat bank account, and the attractive mate don't materialize immediately — or ever."
