The type of networking we normally do with computers is mainly limited to messaging. At a basic level, you and I and other network users can send each
other messages, which are essentially elements of an ongoing dialog.
At a more complex level, you (as a user of computer resources) and a computer (as a server of such resources) may carry on a detached, translated dialog with one another. By way of an application that acts as a translator, you request resources from a server, and the server responds... with a message consisting of some kind of data whose format follows a previously agreed upon interface.
With internetworking becoming a ubiquitous concept, and processor speed only continuing to rise, the question arises, what if parallel processing could be implemented at a network transport level. On the OSI model, this would boost the management and distribution of system functions all the way from Tier
2 to Tier 4. If it could be done, should it? Is there something to be gained from enabling processors to work in tandem? Could bigger, broader computing tasks be done faster — or, better yet, could newer and more wide-ranging applications be made feasible, such as background contextual indexing of
evolving business documents? (In short, your own pocket Google.)
Back in June, we presented articles exploring the concept of grid computing, such as Scott Chalfant and Jim Anthony's Jini and
JavaSpaces: Enabling the Grid. But now that the grid computing concept is out there in the public domain, the next stage in its evolution — as with all great concepts in computing — is for it to be digested into seminar material for business analysts. To that end, we present some pre-digested material for your perusal: Richard Murch's Grid Planning.
If we think of all network tasks as communications, and all communications as dialogs on some level, then shouldn't the same taboos that prevent individuals from saying too much to one another, apply at the computing level?
In short, why can't computer processes be as shy as we are? If you know anything about the Kerberos authentication system, you already know that considerable effort has been expended in researching this very question, with substantive results that Windows Server 2003 administrators deal with every day. This week in the Reference Guide, I study the mindset of the MIT engineers who first conceived Kerberos, and why shy college students are probably the best people to come up with ideas on how to secure the communications process between components that don't really know each other very well.
