STATE CRITICAL OF LEE GROWTH PLAN; JUST WEEKS TO FIX IT
State planning officials arent too happy with the latest version of Lee
Countys comprehensive plan, and the two sides have until Dec. 20 to resolve
the issues or future development in some areas of the county could grind to a
halt. The Florida Department of Community Affairs sent a laundry list of
concerns to county planners last week. DCA officials review major changes to
county growth plans and are sometimes involved with the review of larger
developments.

TAX QUESTIONS NO FACTOR IN POTENTIAL ESTERO ANNEXATION
Bonita Springs officials worried that their efforts to push the city limits
northward were over before they had a chance to start. If Estero and Bonita
ever merged, they feared the newly enlarged city might lose out on millions of
dollars each year in shared state tax revenue because of a 30-year-old state
law. But a state revenue official says its possible for the city to annex
Estero and still meet the states revenue-sharing requirements.

LELY STUDENT ON PROBATION AFTER PLEA AGREEMENT
The lesson Elwood June has learned since his arrest came at a hefty price. But
leaving the courtroom with probation instead of prison time, a withholding of a
formal conviction instead of a criminal record, June realized the price is
worth it. What I have learned from all of this is that next time I should pick
my friends more wisely, June, 15, told Collier County Circuit Judge Frank
Baker after being placed on probation Tuesday.

JUDGE BACKS CITY IN CASE OF DEVELOPER DENIED REZONING REQUEST
A judge has sided against a developer who accused the Bonita Springs City
Council of denying his rezoning request because officials wanted the riverfront
property to turn into a park instead. Peter Roberts of Naples declined to
comment on whether he would appeal Lee County Circuit Judge R. Thomas Corbins
decision. He also declined to discuss any matter relating to the case, saying,
I think the best thing to do is to just keep my mouth shut.

IN PERSPECTIVE:
PAUL CAMPOS: IT WAS THE PLAYERS FAULT
It was the players, not the fans, who were guilty in the Detroit basketball
brawl. In the 1970s, the Detroit Pistons played their games in a drafty old
building called Cobo Hall. The team was generally somewhere between mediocre
and terrible, so good seats were always available. It was the players, not the
fans, who were guilty in the Detroit basketball brawl.
