Here's what's new on StarNet, the online service of the Arizona Daily Star:

Suspended aide at odds with LaWall
A county prosecutor says he was suspended by County Attorney Barbara LaWall
because he discussed reporting his bosses for ethics violations if they failed
to declare a conflict of interest in the murder prosecution of Dr. Bradley
Schwartz.

Courthouse Nativity is retired
A desert scene with painted cacti and deer decorates the Old County Courthouse
instead of the traditional Nativity scene this year. It's not a case of
political correctness, Pima County officials say, but rather the deterioration
of the 50-year-old life-size papier-mache figures.

Open & Shut: Public records access
On three consecutive days in September 2004, journalists and students visited
about 120 government agencies across Arizona to test how they apply Arizona's
Public Records Law. They identified themselves by name only, because the law
does not require a reason when making a records request and so they would be
treated as average citizens. Read the three-day series of reports on StarNet.

Simplicity is the only gift he seeks this Christmas season
Mike Millard just doesn't do presents. The people at work know they risk a
lecture if they so much as whisper "Secret Santa exchange." He holds up to the
pressure better than Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis in the movie "Christmas
With the Kranks," currently in theaters. But he's really not Grinchy at all.

Greg Hansen: Ex-Wildcat Simon leaves Italian league
Miles Simon, MVP of the 1997 Final Four and a consensus All-American in 1998,
has retired from competitive basketball. Last week he requested his release
from Reggio Emilia of the Italian Pro League. So that's it. At 29, Simon leaves
the game having appeared in five NBA games. Yes, five.
