I've learned recently that figuring out email formatting is more difficult than
one might expect. There's the user's mail client, the mailing list's
processing (if any), the recipient's client, and any online archival services.
There's a plethora of settings, including wrap settings on both sender's and
recipient's mail clients, as well as the assortment of processing done for
replies. Then throw in conversions between HTML and plain text, and back. I
wouldn't be surprised if it's the latter that's confusing things.
The result is that even when sending to yourself, it's easy to configure your
mail client so that the appearance of the message as you compose it is not the
same as the appearance when you read the received version.
