I always favored Hex Editors for first projects. Maybe its my age, but
I always thought that HexEditors could be fairly straight forward and
include some nice concepts while still hitting many different aspects
of any language.

Also looking into Eckel's Thinking in Java is a good way to work
through new problems. Its free and exceptionally good - you don't find
that combination very often.
