Hello Robert,

12vdc is too high for many windings. Damage is possible and likely.

What is the listed voltage and current rating for the motor?

Try a 1.5vdc D cell battery. Any stepper that can run a mill will handle
that with ease. You should expect nothing to happen if the leads are not
part of the same winding. You should expect the motor to move slightly
then stop if the leads are part of the same winding. If you rotate by
hand, the shaft will settle into only certain positions for each pair of
connected leads.

You should be able to connect lead pairs in an order that rotates the
shaft one step at a time.

An ohmmeter is better for testing. That way you not only know which
leads are part of the same winding but you also know the resistance and
which, if any, is a center tap.
