Probably!  I suspect that stepper has a 5 V or lower coil-voltage, and  12 V 
from such a low-impedance source (car battery) will send TENS of amps  through 
the coils!!   Do that ONLY with a 10 ohm/50 W. resistor in  series with that 
DC source.  The motor will seem to "lock up" when you  apply the DC, and you 
would have to have a pair of SPDT switches to make it step  (or a proper 
unipolar driver).
