Here it is, the time of year
when many columnists feel the need to blurt out their New Years

I've been a huge fan of Tony Little's Gazelle for several months
now. Out of all the exercise equipment I've ever used (at home or
remotely), it's been the easiest, cleanest, and most effective. It's a
glider, not an eliptical. Tony Little is more than a little annoying
with his commercial, but don't ignore his product if you're looking to
fulfill a New Year's Resolution. I had abandoned my Gazelle for
several weeks, since I'd... [Continued]

It's like the Lycos "Make Love Not Spam" project, only with all
that concentrated computing power being focussed on the public good.
The World Community Grid is an organization whose lofty goal is to
"create the world's largest public computing grid to tackle projects
that benefit humanity". They do this by harnessing the computer power
of your Internet-connected PC when it is otherwise idle. Much like the
Seti project, or, again, the poorly executed yet... [Continued]

files, documents, or any other file type with ease. Files can be
shared with colleagues and friends on a network, intranet, or Internet
without needing any third-party software or a browser plug-in. It is
also a very robust solution for customized user management with

concept, really! You can set the program to automatically make a
backup within regular intervals of time, for example: daily, weekly,
etc. Cobian Backup offers additional support for PKzip compressions
and can be run as a service under... [Continued]

As human beings, we usually try our best to watch out for
ourselves. We avoid potentially harmful situations because we know
that there is a chance that we could get seriously injured. All of us
care about our well being, and we continually strive to improve
ourselves. However, one of the facets of life that we tend to forget
about is our health. None of us are superhuman, and if we ignore our
health needs,... [Continued]

process does. Is it safe to let it run, or should I completely stop it
from loading?... [Continued]

Since this is the time of year that people send a lot of cards to
each other, and since many seniors like to send out cards for special
occasions, part of any formal course might include some work on
creating personalized greeting cards. This can be a danger. Over the
years, I have acquired a sizeable collection of CDs with greeting card
programs on them. Most came with printers as a freebie and are

One of the most common questions I hear when doing Office training
is "How do I import data from Excel into my document?" Well there are
a few different ways in which you can import data from Excel. The
method you use will depend on whether or not you want the Excel data
to retain its functionality in Word. If you want, you can simply copy
and paste your data into Word. When you do... [Continued]

use a computer running Windows XP as a Web server. You can do so by

not installed by default. Once it has been installed, it provides for
basic Web server functionality and includes the WWW, FTP, NNTP, and

It seems that online baddies are again using a flaw in the Windows
help system to help themselves - to access to your computer system. As
reported by Aunty last week, a flaw in the help system for certain
releases of Windows, along with instructions on how to exploit it,
were announced by a Chinese security firm earlier this month. However
this new Trojan, just discovered this week by security firm Symantec,

I work on a Dell Inspirion 2650, XP system, 128M RAM. Sometimes
when I'm working it goes into slow-motion; I've watched the line of
text I typed come onto the screen letter at a time long after I quit
typing. I've checked to make sure nothing else is running in the
background and find nothing like a virus infection seems to be
happening. What's going on and how can I fix it? It can be... [Continued]

We reported on this story late last week - now there's a Trojan in
the wild that Symantec is calling Trojan.Phel.A (more info about the
Windows security holes Aunty reported on is here). "Trojan.Phel.A
attempts to infect computers running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack
2 or later." It also downloads and executes Backdoor.Coreflood, a
Trojan that turns the infected computer into an IRC bot used to attack
other computers. Like Aunty said, Thanks! (NOT) Phel... [Continued]
