Normally there is enough wind pressure that the cam at the fairlead "trips" and grips the windward line. Ours has been beaten up a bit and can stick in light winds.
As to your release question, a quick flip of the traveller sheet is enough to clear it from the cam most of the time (This is where the line length [the slack] is crytical). If it does not release, I pull and lift the line at the same time, which runs it up out of the cam. We find it at least as easy and in heavy air it's easier than releasing the main sheet.
