Thanks Craig for these clarifications. I'm glad to hear that Cypher will get these features built-in.
Now it's really annoying not to have a roadmap on that; we're planning the development of a new platform so we're in the middle of evaluating the best options (the usual story!) and it would tremendously help to understand if we're weeks or months (or more?) from these features being integrated. I must say that from the few comparisons I've made, OrientDB seems to have a more "integrated" story when it comes to juggling with different indexing methods. But honestly I would prefer going with Neo4j as your level of documentation is by an order of magnitude better than theirs.
