It should work without the --with-libs workaround mentioned there... this issue has not been properly diagnosed. It should be sufficient to pass just "--with-ssl" to enable SSL on a RHEL3 system, it works fine for me. Jack, can you upload the complete config.log produced from a failed configure run somewhere?
