1983. My 8th grade in Catholic school (The "Marista" lineage, here in Brazil). There was of course this small chapel in the school where students, teachers, priests, etc. could attend. In that chapel, there were a couple such "flame" bulbs by the altar, and I became quite intrigued and mesmerized by their glow. In my infinite curiosity, I asked the Religion studies teacher what were those tubes all about, and she answered, "when those flames are on, son, it means that god is present". In my infinite atheism just as well, I remember thinking to myself... "yeah, all righty, but can't it be also that there's just some electricity there?"
Thinking back, that was probably my first contact with orange-glowing neon. And you can tell the boy was hooked.
