Have you ever played with a Jacob's ladder? It involves a high voltage arc
across an increasing distance formed by two wires that widen as you go up.
The arc forms at the closest point between the wires, and the heat formed by
the arc "pushes" the arc up the ladder.

 

Your flicker bulb is similar in principle. The Jacob's ladder will not work
very well upside down either.

I wanted to use a couple of "flicker flame bulbs (See link below) BUT
after buying them and reading the small print, it says that you can't
use them upside down. Does anyone have any ideas as to WHY this might
be?? I used them anyways and so far haven't burnt the house down
yet...
