Even the IN-14 has risen in price dramatically. When I built my wife's clock 5 years ago, they were something like $1/each. Now they are something like $6/each.

Actually they are about $4 each, but this is still very much, yes.

Probably. Personally, I do like side view tubes much more. Another reason might be their base that requires a socket.
