I still rember the ad with the fellow smoking a pipe, and putting together a "Zenith" TV set, with "No printed wiring and no production short cuts" while RCA was talking about their "Precision Etched Circuits as used in Space Satellites"
Early consumer Circuit boards were on a paper based material and were famous for developing cracks and lifted traces. This was no doubt partly due to the repair guys being used to pressing down while using their 300W Weller Soldering Guns.
