The first color TV we had when I was a kid, we had to assemble,
GR-169, from Heathkit, in 1973. Took us 3 days  :)  I have it, it's
sitting right next to me, not two feet away. The schematic was
included, as were 4 pages of manuals on how to assemble, align, and
troubleshoot it.

I recall seeing a flat pack IC at dad's work sometime in the early
70s. The Heathkit has a sound IC, lots of transistors, and a rectifier
diode in the HV cirucuit (I think? David will know, and I'm too lazy
to look at the books)

We didn't get into making homebrew clocks and calculators and stuff
until the mid 70s. Lack of money might have been part of the reason.
