The formula for lifetime is: lifetime is proportional to 1/(I^3).
I found that multiplexing at 2x rated current for 1/6 duty cycle worked
well and gave similar lifetime to direct current.
I have a clock on my mantel that's been running a set of ZM1040 tubes
with 1/6 multiplexing for 9 years with some darkening of the glass but
it still looks very good.
