You really want to get into the "Rube Goldberg" spirit of the thing.
Get two of these multiturn precision pots:

Mechanically couple both to a servomotor. One pot goes to the Nixie
ohmmeter, and the other is used for feedback. Have a controller drive
the servo motor, and monitor the feedback pot until it dials in the
proper time/resistance. If the step resolution is small enough, you
may even get away with using a stepper motor, instead of the servo
motor.
