If this is for a 6 digit nixie clock, then you'll only need 45 output macros. 16 each for the seconds and minutes (10 for the units, and 6 for the tens), for 32 subtotal. 12 for the hours in 12-hour mode, or 13 for the hours in 24-hr mode. 13 + 32 = 45. My big question is what's the power consumption of current version CPLDs. In the past, they sucked power like something awful. You still need to tie them to a high voltage driver (scads of MPSA42s, or 7 SN75468s), so there goes the chip count. If them CPLDs still suck a lot of juice, then you'll have to way the chip count against power usage. A CPLD versus 5 74HCT595 shift register chips.
