I recall vising a friend who worked in a Building in Toronto as a Heating/Air Conditioning tech (The building was big enough (30 + Stories) that they had someone monitoring at all times) Back in the mid 1970 era.
The control room had a Decwriter which would type out a line each minute and then type out the status changes "Chiller 1 Started" "Fan 35 shut down" etc. They had to file the roll, and note what they had done for any Alarms.
