I still don't understand why the Arduino is so popular. I'm a big fan of the AVR microcontrollers and the Bascom AVR compiler. A free demo is available that is only limited in the max code size you can compile, a limit I have never come close to with a clock. If you prefer C you can use WinAVR which is completely free.
PIC is another popular hobby chip but when I was looking the compiler selection was more limited and more expensive.
