Yep, I love those PLCC sockets. Also, sparkfun makes some nice SOIC,
SSOP & SOT23 breakout boards for those of us that prefer vector board to
PCB.

There are PLCC sockets with .1" spacing, they work just fine with the
44 pin types and can be soldered quite easily.
