However, the big problem was the video, the camera with the fastest shutter speed on video only has fully automatic exposure, which resamples at a relatively high frequency so the muxing really messes up the exposure, That ended up creating the first badly overexposed. video The solution turned out to be relatively simple, I backlit the background quite brightly so that the meter, which works on a full scene average, was forced to darken the overall exposure. if you have manual controls you don't have a problem, if it is a fully auto camera you need to start fooling it into setting a smaller aperture to get good balance. If you want a black background to your tube picture you could still do this trick by putting some black card behind the tubes only and have a very much brighter and lighter background in the rest of the frame. using Paint or the mac equivalent, or photoshop, you can cut the whole image back to just show the nicely exposed tubes with a black background. For colour balance, you will need to play around with all of any automatic scene mode settings. If the camera is fully automatic it will give better colours set for shade. Yoiu need something around 6700K for colour balance of the VFD's so a 'shade' setting with some +/- compensation (if you have it) could work.
