Back in the 1970's I worked in a shop that sold calculators, there were lots of calculators which had a small 8 digit VFD display Some of them used a bunch of tubes in a row.

the US*4 is an example of the multi-tube design

A "watch VFD display" could probably be made as easily as a watch nixie.
