Yes, I totally agree with that, but when you grow up in the FlipFlop
age, it is a rather obvious choice. It is only since recently that I
became aware of (non flipflop) ring counters and how they actually
function. It is indeed a more efficient and less power consuming way
to build a clock. I like that clock that uses neon bulbs as ring
counters, and LDRs to turn on a specific digit in the nixie tube. Very
interestingly, it uses two blue LEDs to keep it running properly
during night time, which is exactly what I was planning to do for my
nixie watch. After working out how those neon bulbs can function as a
ring counter, I was convinced you could do something similar with diac
diodes, so I played around with that for a while and although a bit
critical, you can make it work. So a nixie clock using diacs can also
be made I think.
