Hi folks, I am currently thinking about the annealing oven I need to have in order to make stable and reliable glass work with soda lime glass. As far as I can tell, the typical way to go is to use a heating element like either nichrome wire or some ceramic element.
I am currently considering a different way: Hot air pistols can be adjusted to temperatures of roughly 600 °C, and for annealing soft glass I only need 530 °C. So I was thinking to mount my hot air pistol under a small pipe with a 3-10cm diameter. The pipe is open at the bottom (this is where the hot air gets in) and closed with a cap or so on top (not airtight, with a few small holes). I will also mount a fixture on the cap so that I can easily insert the tube into the "oven" by installing the cap on the upper end of the pipe. The advantage is clear: it is very small, and very cheap. The only problem is that I have no direct temperature control, so I will have to insert a thermometer and adjust the pistol temperature accordingly. Does this sound like something that will work?
