When I was designing my clock I decided to run the uC at 3.3V since the gps and 
rf modules I wanted to use run at this voltage.

In order to communicate with the HV5522 I used a very simple bi-directional 
mosfet level shifter. I read about it on a app note and I use it since then. 
Although with the 5522 the link doesn't need to be bi-directional I just went 
with whatever I knew.
