Indeed - I have a number of commodity switched multiple-outlet (typically 4 
socket) power code extenders - these tend to have a neon "live" indicator 
and almost all fail within 1 year or two.

These things (the power strips) are such a commodity item and are so cheap 
I suspect that the neons are simply sub-standard and not proper NE-2s or 
similar.
