I'd recommend experimenting with linear supplies first, before experimenting with switchmode (boost, flyback). Linear supplies are well-behaved, even when they are abused, and all you really need for debugging them is an inexpensive DMM.
For switchmode, a scope is an absolute must, and preferably a digital one.
