I read that glow disconnecting from the bottom has to do with the speed at which the signal changes. So the « steepness » of the signal. To prevent that, Pete Virica has implemented a filter in his bargraph kit (page 10) : http://www.pvelectronics.co.uk/kits/DuoDrive/duodrive_v1.pdf
