Yes, processor = MCU.

Using an NE555 would be no problem, I'm using standard TTL for the logic of 
the clock itself. I know there is one dimming circuit which uses the NE555, 
this one: http://www.mcamafia.de/nixie/ncp_dt/nix_dim.htm but that doesn't 
use an LDR.

If I remember correctly the design made use of triangle waveforms and a 
comparator which compared against the LDR. I've found a few similar designs 
when googling, but nothing that was designed for Nixies like the one I 
found several years ago.
