Every VFD display module that I've used has utilized this same basic 
design...  The inductors are part of the voltage convertor and the filament 
voltages are pulled prior to what would be the final rectification stage in 
a DC-DC design.  So it's an AC signal, but likely a higher frequency.  They 
must be fairly efficient - this display only uses about 200ma in operation 
and is easily powered by the 5V pin on my usb serial adapter.
