I am reposting this message as this has not been appearing on mailing-list and I have now seen message stating that the mailing-list has been broken!
I have been experimenting here with nessus -- I notice lots of people on this list run into problems with nessusd 1.2.* seemingly! We have been having lots of trouble with nessusd getting into a state where it will nologner perform scans properly, just giving no results seemingly. -Using client NessusWX 1.4.2 on windoze-2000 -- were having trouble with the client-pc slowing-down / "freezing" and not working properly! -Incomplete tests. Even though full set of tests were selected; the scan completed and the results showed only minimal results. Loads of stuff would be missed about what was running on the ports that the scan may have found open. This would happen after e.g. a few successful scans; then fail to produce sensible results again, then ?may fix itself (not sure)?; usually fixed by just restarting nessusd. -No feedback on the scan. The client showed no feedback on how the scan was progressing. If left long enough and the scan stopped the results file indicated that the scan was actually taking place. -Scan locking up. At various points the scan used to lock up. Stopping the scan produced a results file apparently up to the point of cancellation. I have tried under 2 different linux distributions/versions but still seem to run into the same problems ;/ I notice nessus 1.2.7 but dont see any fixes for this kind of problem in changelog; dont see any known bugs for this kind of problem either (??). Also notice nessus 1.2.6 known-bugs dont seem to reference this kind of problem... I did reduce plugin timeouts too -- just doesnt seem to work! I have been meaning to try 1.0.* version of nessus -- e.g. the "nessus" package in debian 3.0r0... -- but I am very muddled by the 'certificates' part -- I do not understand who needs what certificate file, etc. -- this just doesnt seem to work! -- Doesn't really make any sense to me! would most appreciate if somebody pointed me at relevant information so I can get this set up to actually work! Any help and/or comments from others with similar problems would be most appreciated. -Simon
