Try looking in the nessusd.messages file ( default installation puts this in /usr/local/var/nessus/logs ). You will more than likely find your answers there.

Hi there --
The nessus program, version 2.2.4, on our computer does not remain on when
activated either via startup script or manual intervention. During manual
activation, using the command /usr/local/sbin/nessusd -D, the program appears to
load the plugins without difficulty. However, when the ps -ef |grep nessus
command is run, there is no instance of the application listed on-screen.
