Use of the -g 20 option on nmap will help you get the mac addresses of the hosts running windows as well (since you are dealing with students) in a likely scnenario, besides detecting open ports/dangerous services. If you have a lot of hosts, do not use the ping option if you want to scan for the whole gamut of ports.

Maybe that nessus is a little bit oversized for that task.
What about nmap to do only a port scan?
(incl. service detection...)

We want to do agentless port scan for students’computers to detect
potential dangerous services running on the hosts. We donot want to do
local security check.
