I've been using Nessus 3 on a RedHat EL 4 AS VM for quite a while now. The host is a Windows XP system (dual core/4GB RAM) running VMWare server (the freebie). I try not to run more than 4 hosts at a time in Nessus otherwise it'll take forever. If you're not scanning many systems or have many plugins enabled it'll work pretty good.
