Colleagues

I am editing a special issue of _Academic Exchange Quarterly_ an
international journal dedicated to the presentation of ideas research,
methods, and pedagogical theories leading to effective instruction and
learning regardless of level or subject.

The topic of the special issue is "The Teaching of Literature and Culture."
I am looking for articles dealing with theoretical and practical methods of
the teaching of literature and/or culture, how technology can be used for
the teaching of literature/culture, student attitudes towards
literature/culture, the role of literature in various disciplines, how
culture can influence the learning process, the future of literary/cultural
studies, ethical issues concerning the teaching of literature/culture, and
the assessment of literary/cultural learning.

http://rapidintellect.com/AEQweb/win0222.htm

The articles should be 1500-3000 words long. Because of the
interdisciplinary nature of our journal, no single format or manuscript
style is required. The articles may be submitted by MS Word or postal mail.
Although the deadline for submission is October 1, 2002, early submissions
will be given special consideration.

For submission information, go to the following URL:

You Might Be In Education If...

You believe chocolate is a major food group

You believe in the aerial spraying of Prozac

Meeting a child's parent instantly answers the question "Why is this kid like
that?"

You can converse in middle school lingo

You last nerve is a distant memory...

You find humor in public parental discipline

You believe the staff room should be equipped with Valium salt licks

Junior Highers make you feel old but you could not be paid to be that
age again

You want to slap the next person who says "Must be nice to only work 6
hours days, have all holidays off, and your summers free."

You refer to adults as "boys and girls"

You can tell it's a full moon without ever looking outside

You believe "extremely annoying" should have it's own box on the report card

When you are out in public, you snap your fingers at children who are
misbehaving

You give your spouse "the look" when he or she "misbehaves"

You buy economy size bottles of Advil from Costco

You think people should be required to get a government permit before
being allowed to reproduce, earned by having worked in a middle school
for 5 years

You encourage a parent to check into home schooling

THE LIBRARIAN'S WEB DILEMMA
The decisions of how to protect library patrons from the darker side of
Internet will continue to be made at the local level. The latest
Congressional effort to deal with the issue, the Children's Internet
Protection Act, was blocked by a three-judge federal appellate panel in
Philadelphia. While sympathetic to the goals of the law, which required
libraries to install Web filters or risk losing federal funds for Internet
access, the judges found the filters were too crude to avoid blocking
unobjectionable material that library patrons have a right to see. In the
absents of a federal standard, local library systems have gravitated to
different approaches to meeting their needs. "Because libraries are so
deeply rooted in their communities, librarians have the best read on their
communities and how to approach the issues around Internet access," said
John W. Berry, who stepped down this week as president of the American
Library Association. While some libraries continue to use filtering services
that blocks access to Web pages with adult content, others have made
computer access more private to protect children and passers-bys from
viewing unwanted content.
