My initial concerns were over a last minute change to the configure
script itself.  Once Robert and Alex had pointed out that it was just
tweaking a header file, then that just left the question of the
release candidate to full release transition.

Which addresses that concern too.
If we're pressing another RC tarball, and are prepared to let things
slip a week, then I'm fully behind getting this particular bug fixed.

(It also allows me to get a couple of documentation fixes in, which
 I might not have risked if going straight to the full release!)
