There's also a configure option for where to install to.

        ./configure --help

  Installation directories:
    --prefix=PREFIX         install architecture-independent files
                            in PREFIX   [/usr/local]
    --exec-prefix=EPREFIX   install architecture-dependent files
                            in EPREFIX  [PREFIX]

    --with-install-prefix=PATH      Just for installing, prefix
                            all directories with PATH.
