I didn't mean make the daemon synchronous, I mean make the sub-agent call to
the daemon synchronous.

There just aren't any hooks in the baby-steps handler to interrupt a set
request in mid-processing to wait for a response. In theory, it should be
doable, but given that the top level processing blocks on a set request
anyway, I don't see the point.
