This discussion is not really related to the bug in which it popped up,
therefore I just take it to the mailing list.

I hurry to say that I have got it to work now (and I will check the status
of the bug when I get time).
What I did was to pick up the Debian-related patches from a recent
packaging that the Debian maintainer of net-snmp, Jochen Friedrich, made
to Debian experimental. It was based on CVS 2005-08-15, and it applies
equally well to the 5.2.2.pre3.
What did not work for me was trying the sequence in the debian/rules files
for 5.2.1.2-3, without the related debian-specific patches - it failed.
It might be a good idea to add a few words to the INSTALL file about the
roles of libtoolize, aclocal and autoconf ...?
