No.  I'll tell you when I think it's a +1 for that route.

We're still adding new features at a very late stage.  Why is it so
important to get this into 5.4 and not being more cautious and waiting
till 5.5?  It doesn't seem to be a critical need and I'd rather opt
for stability.

(side note: we do have users on ancient platforms; we have a horrible
history of getting people to upgrade both their platforms and their
net-snmp versions...  I doubt it's our fault they won't upgrade;
adding things that may break on their systems doesn't help in getting
them to upgrade their net-snmp release).

I definitely think that's the right way to go for a release or so
(though I'm leaning more toward 5.5 being when to start that).  I'd
even agree that making configure do the right thing of linking libs
against libs if possible is a better way to go, but I disagree that
5.4 is the right time to start that in.
